What is the Hancock County Sheriff's Citizen Academy?

 

The Sheriff's Citizen Academy is a look into the daily responsibilities and operation of the Hancock County Sheriff's Department. The Hancock County Sheriff's Department believes that educating the citizens of Hancock County will aid in police / community rapport and will help to dispel misconceptions and misunderstanding. In turn, the Sheriff's Department becomes more aware of the feeling and concerns of the community through input from the students.

 

 

Course Description

 

The instruction is comprehensive, covering a wide variety of law enforcement topics each week. Certified deputies, supervisors, and civilian instructors with particular expertise will conduct each topic. Classes are free and limited to 24 citizen attendees.

Who may attend the Academy?

 

  • Any interested citizen who is at least 18 years of age or older and who lives or works in Hancock County.
  • Citizens with no prior felony convictions
  • Able to make a commitment to attend the ten week course

 

When is the Academy?

 

The Sheriff's Citizen Academy will meet every Tuesday for ten consecutive weeks with a 3 hour instruction period.  

At the end of the program there will be a field practice day with several department members who will role play scenerios of incidents that are likely to happen in law enforcement.

Classes begin on Tuesday, March 07, 2017 from 06:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
